Renault is revolutionizing car paint technology with Jetprint Paint—a more eco-friendly, precise, and energy-efficient process that debuts on the new all-electric Renault 4 E-Tech.

Renault is revolutionizing how two-tone car paint is applied, thanks to its innovative Jetprint Paint system—a breakthrough innovation that debuts alongside the Renault 4 E-Tech electric at the Maubeuge plant, which is part of the Ampere ElectriCity production hub.

This future electric vehicle is not only a nod to the iconic Renault 4 but also the inspiration behind one of the most significant production line innovations in the automotive sector.

What Is Jetprint Paint? A Revolution in Two-Tone Finishes

Previously, a two-tone paint finish equaled multiple production steps, manual masking, and additional energy usage. Now, thanks to Jetprint Paint, it is faster, cleaner, and more environmentally friendly.

Key Jetprint Paint benefits:

  • Accurate painting using robotic jets
  • Energy savings of 1.7 GWh per year (equivalent to 350 homes)
  • Waste reduction by forgoing masking products and excess paint
  • Two-tone finish in just six minutes
  • CO₂ emissions savings of 331 tons annually

“Jetprint Paint is revolutionary,” affirms Frédéric, Paint Sector Consultant for the Renault 4 project. “It’s a game-changer in terms of production.”.

How the Jetprint Paint Process Works

At the center of the system is a unique paint booth incorporated directly within the assembly line. Two robot arms apply a controlled jet of paint—between 1 and 50 mm in width—to the roof and bonnet of the Renault 4 E-Tech electric, with pressure and gravity rather than high-voltage atomization used to direct it.

The process replaces the former system, which comprised:

  • Initial painting and drying
  • Manual masking using tape and plastic
  • A second visit to the paint booth for two-tone accents
  • Re-drying in energy-guzzling ovens

The result? Improved production efficiency, a premium finish, and dramatically minimized environmental impact.

Designed with Personalization and Future Scalability in Mind

Jetprint Paint enables highly customized two-tone paint designs, providing Renault 4 E-Tech electric customers with a premium, personalized look, canvas roof or a canvas roof.

“Due to this innovation, Renault 4 E-Tech electric can be personalized uniquely,” states Katell, Renault Group Head of Paint. “It expresses its individuality while being part of our strategy of sustainability.”

For Katell, the possibilities don’t stop at two-tone: the same technology could allow for custom designs for fleet vehicles and tailored finishes for individual buyers, all with minimal waste and maximum precision.

Renault 4 E-Tech Electric: Bringing Back an Icon with Clean Technology

The Renault 4 E-Tech electric marks the start of a new chapter for the Maubeuge plant, which has been synonymous with Kangoo production since 1997. Today, the site is a spearhead of Renault’s EV revolution and its efforts to make its production more sustainable.

Key production milestones at Maubeuge:

  • First use of Jetprint Paint by a full-line automaker
  • First electric passenger vehicle to be manufactured at the site
  • The first two-tone process is fully integrated into a mass production line

“The timing was ambitious,” says Katell, “but everything had to be ready for the launch of Renault 4 E-Tech.”

Why Jetprint Paint Is a Game-Changer for Sustainable Auto Manufacturing

  • This innovative paint process:
  • Reduces factory emissions
  • Lowers energy consumption
  • Improves finish quality
  • Streamlines production

It’s a shining example of how established car manufacturers such as Renault are embracing clean technologies to future-proof their factories—and offer greener vehicles without any diminution of quality or style.

“Jetprint Paint is contributing to more sustainable production,” Katell summarizes. “It’s high quality guarantees a bright future within the Renault Group.”.
