Major New Bridge to Transform Traffic Flow Between Bur Dubai and Dubai Islands

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has officially awarded a contract for the construction of a massive eight-lane bridge over Dubai Creek. Valued at Dh786 million, the bridge is designed to significantly alleviate traffic congestion around Bur Dubai and improve access to the Dubai Islands.

Spanning 1,425 metres, the bridge will connect the Infinity Bridge with the Port Rashid Development Area, forming a key link in the emirate’s growing road network. Once completed, the structure will handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

Engineering and Design: Built for Capacity and Connectivity

The new bridge will stand 18.5 metres above Dubai Creek, with a 75-metre-wide navigational channel beneath it to allow smooth passage for marine traffic. Its design accommodates all types of vessels, ensuring that Dubai’s maritime activity remains uninterrupted.

In line with Dubai’s push for sustainable and inclusive infrastructure, the bridge will include:

  • Dedicated pedestrian and cycling paths
  • Elevators for easy access to non-motorized users

Additionally, 2,000 metres of connecting surface roads will link the bridge to existing networks on both the Dubai Islands and Bur Dubai sides.

Part of the Al Shindagha Corridor Development Plan

This project is a key element in the broader Al Shindagha Corridor Development, one of RTA’s flagship infrastructure programs aimed at:

  • Enhancing traffic flow across Deira and Bur Dubai
  • Connecting major developments like Dubai Islands, Dubai Maritime City, and Port Rashid
  • Reducing travel time and congestion in one of the city’s most historically significant areas

RTA’s Vision for Seamless Urban Connectivity

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, emphasized that this initiative is part of a strategic roadmap to support Dubai’s long-term growth:

“This is the second major contract for building access points to Dubai Islands. In partnership with Dubai Holding, we previously completed three bridges totaling 1.6 km in 2020, improving traffic flow to and from Al Khaleej Street.”

Those earlier bridges included:

  • A two-lane bridge for northbound traffic from Dubai Islands to Al Khaleej Street
  • A three-lane bridge for southbound traffic in the same direction
  • A two-lane bridge connecting Al Khaleej Street southbound to the Dubai Islands

What This Means for Residents and Businesses

The new bridge will:

  • Reduce congestion around key urban zones
  • Improve commute times for residents in Bur Dubai and surrounding areas
  • Facilitate development in waterfront destinations such as Dubai Islands and Port Rashid
  • Support Dubai’s goals of creating an integrated, multi-modal transportation infrastructure
